Hello everyone,
From an ideal palace to Algarve's treasure...
There are cultures and culture. This September, like Candide, we continued to cultivate our garden, gradually resurrected from the terrible summer drought: the pond was once again full, the cosmos, nightshades, and purslane blooming in all their beauty.
Then we made two trips along the Rhône Valley, first to a conference organized by the town hall of the pretty village of Gordes (one of the most beautiful in the world, they say). Then, in Hauterives, we had been thinking about a visit to the Palais Idéal of Postman Cheval,, which is truly worth more than a detour. The tenacity and imagination of this man resulted in a marvel, much visited today, but still haunted by the memory of its stubborn builder.
The sudden arrival of depressing temperatures has convinced us to tick off another item on our endless and ever-growing list of things to see on this planet, namely the wonders of the Algarve freed from the summer crowds at the beginning of autumn. Of course, the landscape has suffered greatly from haphazard and unsightly construction, but the shores, beaches, cliffs, and rocks remain spectacular: Praia dos Arrifes, Praia da Falesia, a special mention for the small coves near Portimao, and the colorful caves of Benagil, reached by boat.
Another kind of wonder, in the walled old town of Lagos, the incredible goldwork of the cathedral and the small restaurants that surround it. Todo bom!
Back in Auvergne, we're preparing to head to the Atlantic coast for two conferences (featuring our film about the Atlantic) in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie on October 12th and in Royan on the 13th. If you're in the area, come see us!
